Where is transitional epithelium typically located?

Lining of the bladder

Transitional epithelium is specialized to accommodate distension in the urinary tract. It lines structures that need to stretch as urine is stored and passed, most prominently the urinary bladder (and portions of the ureters and renal pelvis). The cells can appear layered and dome-shaped when the organ is relaxed, then become flatter as the bladder fills, helping protect underlying tissues from urine while allowing expansion. In contrast, the stomach lining is a secretory simple columnar epithelium, the trachea is lined by pseudostratified ciliated columnar epithelium, and the skin is keratinized stratified squamous epithelium. So the typical location is the lining of the urinary bladder.
